10 quick, colourful appetizers to try

1. Fresh fruit salad with toasted nuts; perfect morning appetizer!

Juicy mango, pawpaw, watermelon, and pineapple create a rainbow on your plate. Toasted peanuts or cashews add a satisfying crunch, while a drizzle of honey or a squeeze of lime gives a zingy lift.
Quick tip: Chill the fruits beforehand, the first bite is a burst of Kenyan sunshine.
Mini recipe: Chop fruits and add in a bowl. Toast nuts in a dry pan for 2–3 minutes, then toss everything together with honey or lime. Serve chilled.

2. Creamy soup with golden toast

Think silky pumpkin, tomato, butternut or carrot soup served in small bowls that warm both hands and heart. Pair with slices of garlicky, herby toasted bread.
Each spoonful balances creamy warmth with a satisfying crunch. Perfect for rainy Nairobi afternoons or lazy afternoons on the balcony.
Mini recipe: Heat soup, add a splash of milk for richness. Toast bread slices in a pan or oven and serve hot.

3. Iced tea or spiced chai latte

Brew bold Kenyan black tea and sip it chilled with fresh mint and lemon, refreshing enough for the weekend heat.
Prefer warmth? Turn it into a spiced chai latte by adding creamy milk, cinnamon, cardamom, and a whisper of ginger. Every sip feels like a slow hug, grounding you amidst busy lives.
Mini recipe: Brew tea strong. For iced tea, cool and add lemon/mint. For chai latte, heat milk, add tea and spices, stir, and enjoy warm.

4. Vegetable and beef or chicken samosas

Golden triangles of crisp pastry hiding spiced potatoes and peas, or minced beef/chicken. Bite one and taste a subtle mix of sweet, spice, and savoury. Dip in mango or tamarind(Ukwaju) chutney for that extra punch.

Mini recipe: Fill ready-made samosa wrappers, fold, and seal. Fry 3–5 minutes or bake 12–15 minutes. Serve with chutney. You can also get premade samosas at your local or the supermarket, they come in handy.

5. Crunchy spring rolls with dip

These thin, delicate rolls packed with shredded carrots, cabbage, and bell peppers are really good. The peanut dip, which is a creamy, zesty swirl of peanut butter, soy, lime, and chili, pulls everything together. It is Easy to make, fun to share, and satisfying to crunch.
Mini recipe: Roll veggies in spring roll sheets. Pan-fry 3–4 minutes or bake 8 minutes.
Mix the dip ingredients and serve immediately. You can also get precooked spring rolls from the supermarket.

6. Nutty chicken or beef skewers

Marinated, bite-sized pieces of chicken or beef threaded onto skewers, glazed with crushed peanuts or cashews. Each piece is juicy, smoky, and rich, perfect for a garden BBQ or a sunny balcony snack, you can skip the peanut and replace with BBQ sauce.
Mini recipe: Marinate the cubes in soy, honey, and crushed nuts (Optional)for 5 minutes. Grill or pan-fry 8–10 minutes. Serve hot with fries.

7. Lyonnaise bites

More like fries with a twist. These are potatoes that are golden, crisp, and infused with the sweet, caramelised flavour of onions in true Lyonnaise style.
They are bite-sized, savoury, and packed with rich flavour, perfect with a cup of tea or enjoyed straight off the plate while still warm.
Mini recipe: Saute thinly sliced onions in 1 tbsp butter until golden (5–7 mins) and set aside. Cut potatoes into cubes and fry or bake using an airfryer. Top it off with the caramelized onions, serve and enjoy!

8. Kenyan smocha

A Nairobi classic reinvented: smoky sausages or smokie wrapped in soft chapati, layered with avocado and kachumbari, and finished with a drizzle of choma sauce. Each bite bursts with texture and familiar Kenyan flavours.
Mini recipe: Grill sausages or smokies and cut it in half. Wrap in chapati and top the smokie with kachumbari and avocado. Drizzle choma sauce, fold it up and slice into bite-sized portions or enjoy as it is.

9. Fried plantains

These golden, caramelised, and slightly salty or dusted with cinnamon sugar for a sweet twist. Soft on the inside, crisp on the outside, plantains are a simple snack that somehow feels festive.

Mini recipe: Slice ripe plantains diagonally. Fry until golden. Sprinkle with salt or cinnamon sugar. Serve warm.

10. Chicken wings or fish nuggets with dips

They are crunchy and savoury. These wings or nuggets are irresistible, and quick ukwaju or ranch dipping sauce adds a luxurious creaminess that is simple to whip up. Perfect for sharing with family or friends.

Mini recipe: Heat pre-cooked chicken wings or use small filleted fish pieces for nuggets. Fry or bake until golden and crispy.
For the dip, mix 2 tbsp Ukwaju sauce in a diping bowl and 2 tbsp ranch dressing and a squeeze of lemon juice. Serve and enjoy!

Serve the hot wings or fish nuggets with the dip on the side for a crunchy, creamy bite.
Chef Owen’s tip:
“Prep multiple appetizers at once while chatting or sipping tea. It turns cooking into a weekend ritual, not a chore. The goal isn’t just to eat, it’s to slow down, enjoy the colours, flavours, and textures, and share a little joy with those around you.”
